Paranasal sinuses lymphoma and past hepatitis B virus infection: possible association?

Isabel Pinto, Ana Ribeiro, Pedro Valente, Nuno Lima, Diamantino Helena, Artur Condé

Resumen

Lypmphoid neoplasms account for less than 1% of all head and neck cancers. Divided into Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas, this last group can be further divided into mature B-cell, mature T-cell and NK/T-cell subtypes.

The authors describe the clinical case of a 64-year-old man with complains of nose blockage. On the physical examination the patient showed a facial and palate swelling. The imaging exams revealed an agressive sinonasal mass with large destruction of the maxillary sinus and hard palate. The biopsy allowed the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, the most prevalent subtype of B-cell lymphomas.

On the serologic tests was discovered a past hepatitis B virus infection. This information was important for planning the medical treatment but also, because of the possible association between hepatitis B virus infection and increase risk of B-cell lymphoma, particularly diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
